Thomas McBay
C.E.O./President

Thomas has a varied & vast background in commercial & residential real estate development, contract law, commercial law, marketing, leveraged financing, & all aspects of various business operations. He has also been running a specialty coffee roasting company for over 30 years.

Thomas is an accomplished chef & professional baker in addition to being a specialty coffee Roast Master.

Thomas attended Cabrillo college after graduating from high school. He was planning on continuing his studies & becoming a real estate attorney but he got side tracked by his Japanese wife & moved to Japan to raise a family in 1990.
He is probably the first foreigner to live in the city of Nakatsugawa (pop. about 80,000) in the history of Nakatsugawa. This may be one of the reasons that he became an English conversation teacher by default. In his early days of teaching English he taught classes with upwards of 50 students per class in such large companies as Richoh Emmex, Mitsubishi Electric, many local companies in Nakatsugawa, the city of Nakatsugawa, academic seminars etc. Some years ago he retired from teaching large group lessons to the privacy of independent small group lessons.

His fundamental philosophy in regards to Japanese English speakers is that Japanese English students have spent far too many years studying English and taking English tests and far too little time actually trying to speak in English. He believes absolutely that for a person to able to speak in English that they need to start listening & speaking in English, no matter how low or advanced that level may be.

Thomas is a people person. He loves to meet new people and explore about who they are and what they do. He loves to talk but more importantly he forces himself to listen so that he can understand better how to find common ground and bridge the many generational, ideological and cultural gaps that separate us all. You might say that he is an English conversationalist philosopher of sorts.

Thomas & his wife raised their two children bilingually in Nakatsugawa and now their boys are both successfully and independently living in California. Thomas’ interests are varied and many. Especially he enjoys spending his free time just walking around and investigating everything and anything.

He is currently based in Nakatsugawa, Japan.

How American Geopower Began

David McBay has been keenly interested in the green energy industry for many many years. In 2011, he was in the Palo Alto public library researching which energy systems were making the most progress battling climate change.

Through his research, he found that the solar industry was using molten salts to store heat and potentially compete with nuclear and coal in the area of providing baseload energy (continuous, 24/7 energy).

He also investigated the process of Enhanced Geothermal Energy (EGS) which uses a fracking-based system to release and extract heat in the form of steam. He researched whether anyone was using better transfer fluids than hot water or steam. And he discovered that no one before had used molten salts as a heat transfer fluid for geothermal energy extraction.

Since the day of his realization in 2011 David has worked relentlessly to find better ways to access, harvest, store, and distribute geothermal energy. He has had indispensable help from world famous international patent law firm of Perkins Coie in filing and getting granted patent after patent after patent developed along the way.
